Two Ways to Meet Alaska's Sled Dogs

Alaska's sled dog culture runs deeper than any winter race. These are working kennels, dogs trained year round, mushers who have raced thousands of miles across Alaska, and operations built on decades of genuine husky breeding and racing history. In summer, training happens on treadmills and wheeled rigs rather than snow. Dogs run. Season does not stop. Two tours available through Denali Park Adventures.

When you visit, you're at a working racing operation, one where the dogs held as puppies may eventually run the Iditarod, and where the person narrating the tour has actually crossed the finish line in Nome.

An eye-opening experience!

An eye-opening experience! Your tour guides are the owners of the dog sled operation and the mushers! Yes, the puppies are absolutely adorable!!! But even beyond that they explain their first-hand knowledge of what it is like to compete and complete the Iditarod, as well as raising, training and caring for the dogs. Fun and engaging - highly recommended!

THIS ONE IS THE BEST! 

I’ve visited other Iditarod tourist locations before and THIS ONE IS THE BEST! The couple who run it are so knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. The husband, Mike Santos, has participated in 4 Iditarod’s. You can tell that they love their life and love these dogs. You get to hug a pup as soon as you enter their park and everything is crisp, clean and meant to give you the most immersive experience understanding the life of the dog mushers. They will send you off with a photo of you and one of their pups too. Off the beaten path but HIGHLY recommend.

Don’t miss this if you are in Denali! It is one of the best and most fun things you can do. I was not expecting this level of information and new knowledge about the sport of dog sledding. Jeff King, his family and staff are all phenomenally knowledgeable and generous with their experiences and information. The dogs are the stars and worth every penny to see what they do and how they do it. You will come away with a new appreciation of what goes into raising dogs who can pull a sled for thousands of miles and drag a human along for the ride! I encourage everyone to come here and experience this place.

DogGoneIt: narrated kennel tour, ~1.5 hours, puppy hold moment. More accessible format, shorter, better for limited time or young children.

  • DO I NEED MY OWN TRANSPORT TO HUSKY HOMESTEAD?

    Yes. Husky Homestead is not on the hotel shuttle route. You need your own vehicle or a rental car. Directions are provided at booking. Plan the drive into your schedule.

  • WILL I GET TO HOLD A PUPPY?

    Yes, on both tours. Husky Homestead: puppy cuddle is part of the arrival experience. DogGoneIt: puppy hold moment is included in the narrated tour. Both are guided experiences the puppy encounter is a featured moment, not open-ended playtime.
