Day 2: Discover Denali National Park

There’s plenty to do inside Denali National Park, from hiking and wildlife viewing to ranger programs and scenic drives. Here are two of our favorite ways to spend a day exploring the park:

Option 1: Explore Denali Park Road

For flexibility and freedom, drive the first 15 miles of Denali Park Road, which is open to private vehicles. Along the way, you’ll pass through forests and open tundra, with excellent chances to spot wildlife like moose, caribou, and even bears. Make your way to the Savage River Loop Trailhead, a beautiful 2-mile loop that follows the Savage River through a canyon surrounded by towering peaks.

Before heading into the park, stop by the Denali Visitor Center to learn more about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife — it’s the perfect starting point for first-time visitors.

Option 2: Denali Bus Tour

If you’d rather sit back and let someone else do the driving, consider booking a Denali Bus Tour. These tours range from short narrated natural history trips to full-day excursions deep into the park (weather permitting). The guides are knowledgeable, the scenery is stunning, and the wildlife viewing opportunities are exceptional — with potential sightings of bears, Dall sheep, moose, and caribou.



The “Natural History Tour” goes to Mile 17 (Primrose Ridge) with about 4.5–5 hours round-trip; the “Tundra Wilderness Tour” goes to Mile 43 (East Fork River) in approx. 5–5.5 hours.

The non-narrated “Transit/Green” buses allow more independent exploring (hop-on/hop-off) but without guaranteed commentary.

Dinner: Return to Denali Canyon for dinner and drinks. Whether you go back to 49th State Brewing for another round or try Prospectors Pizzeria for something new, both spots are great for unwinding after a full day of exploring.

Day 3: Take to the Skies – Denali Flightseeing Tour

Your final day in Denali calls for something extraordinary — seeing the park from above.
