THE DRIVE
Driving from Fairbanks to Denali
The Parks Highway south from Fairbanks passes through agricultural lowland before the Alaska Range begins to dominate the horizon. Nenana, a small town at mile 55 south of Fairbanks, is a good stop for fuel and a quick look at the Nenana River and historic Nenana Ice Classic tower. Anderson is a small community about 90 miles south of Fairbanks, shortly before the Denali area.

Denali as a Day Trip from Fairbanks
A day trip from Fairbanks is practical. Two-plus hours each way still leaves a solid 6-8 hours at Denali.
What's realistic in a day
- Two guided activities (ATV + Zipline is the most popular back-to-back combination)
- OR one longer activity (Glacier Landing flightseeing + a park road self-drive)
- Self-drive to Savage River on the park road
Departure timing
Leave Fairbanks by 7–8am to reach Denali by 9:30–10am with time for a morning activity. A return departure by 5–6pm puts you back in Fairbanks by 7:30–8pm.

Two Nights in Denali from Fairbanks
Day 1: Drive and Afternoon Activity
- Depart Fairbanks by 9am

- Evening: Explore the park entrance area, visitor center

Taking the Train
The Alaska Railroad Denali Star runs southbound from Fairbanks, with a stop at Denali. Southbound departs Fairbanks in the morning and arrives Denali midday. The same train continues to Anchorage, useful for guests doing the full interior loop (fly into Fairbanks, train to Denali, continue to Anchorage).

The Interior Alaska Loop: Fairbanks + Denali + Anchorage
Many guests combine all three on one Alaska trip. A common structure:
- Fly into Anchorage
- Drive or train north to Denali (1–3 nights)
- Continue north to Fairbanks (2 to 2.5 hours from Denali)
- Fly home from Fairbanks
Or the reverse: fly into Fairbanks, south to Denali, then Anchorage for departure.
