Details
When most people think of Alaska, they picture gift shops, boardwalks, and bus windows. Commercialized tours that herd you along without ever letting you truly arrive. But that's not the Alaska you came for. The real Alaska is rugged mountains, resilient people, and a wilderness that demands respect. If that's what you're after, this is your tour. Our survival tour takes you entirely off-trail and into the untamed heart of Denali. No crowds, no guardrails, no shortcuts. Just you, your guide, and the forest.
Feel the peat moss sink beneath your feet like a lush green cloud, some steps pulling you nearly a foot into the earth. Your guide hands you a wild berry. You taste it and are surprised to find it tastes exactly like banana cream. That's a cloudberry, and by the end of the tour, you'll know how to identify dozens of edible plants and berries just like it. By the time the tour is over, you won't just be looking at the forest. You'll be reading it. You'll spot permafrost shifts, recognize moose signs, identify game trails, and know instinctively where to build shelter. You won't be observing Denali anymore. You'll be experiencing it. These tours are limited and booking fast. Cancellations are free up to 24 hours before departure, so there's no risk in reserving your spot today.

Additional Information
What's not included
- Food/snacks (most guides carry some snacks, but we encourage you to bring your own.)
- Rain pants if you want them.
Itinerary
- The Berries! Blueberries, cloudberries, currants, cranberries, lingonberries, pumpkin berries, and more. You'll never find them in a grocery store, but they're delicious!
- Survival Skills! Learn real survival techniques from an expert guide who's used these very techniques in an actual survival scenario.
- Join the 5% Club! Only 5% of all Denali travelers go off-trail. I think that's a tragedy. Especially when the very thing that makes Denali unique is its remoteness and lack of trails!
- Get a chance of seeing wildlife! If I'm being honest, it'll probably be a squirrel, but we sometimes see moose, ptarmigan, eagles, weasels, and more in this area. Out of all our tours, this one and the Wilderness Wonders Tour boast the highest chance of wildlife sightings.
Check-in details
You'll get a text from your guide the day before your tour instructing you on exactly what time they'll be picking you up. It won't be more than 30 minutes before the tour departure time.
We recommend getting there a few minutes early just in case.
What to bring
- Long sleeves/pants for mosquito and brush protection
- Bug spray (your guide will have some, but more never hurts)
- Warm clothes
- Water (we can provide it, but we recommend you bring your own)
- Comfortable hiking shoes (likely to get wet if it's raining)
- Food/snacks

LEARNING TO SURVIVE THE WILD WITH JASON
A highlight of my Alaska trip because it was unique and unexpectedly cool. My husband and I did the survival tour with Jason, and we learned so much, from how to start a fire

A GREAT WILDERNESS SURVIVAL EXPERIENCE WITH JADE
We had a great wilderness survival hike with Jade. We got to build a shelter, build a fire, learn about the local floral and fauna. Jade was great answering questions and keeping our whole group.

Policies
Special requirements
Small children must be accompanied by and supervised by an adult at all times. Our guides love kids, but they can't chase down runaway children and guide a tour at the same time. Believe me, they've tried.
Restrictions
This is an off-trail hike. You'll be doing some minor bushwhacking.
If you have mobility or health issues, I would recommend giving our team a call at (907) 687-2070 to discuss if you'll be up for this tour. It's not super strenuous, but four hours is a long time to be on your feet. Especially with uneven terrain!
Extras
We provide trekking poles and rain jackets!
Disclaimers
This tour does not take place within the boundaries of Denali National Park. The Park Service doesn't allow us to guide off-trail there, so we do it just outside of the Park boundaries instead!
Weather Policy
Every effort is made to ensure your hike takes place as planned. Tours continue in rain, cold, and heat, but cannot operate in hazardous conditions. In the event of lightning, heavy smoke, high winds, or ice, a tour may need to be modified or canceled. If modifications are necessary, guests will be notified and may opt for a full refund. In the rare case of a full cancellation, a full refund is issued.
Cancellation Policy
You can cancel for a full refund anytime until your guide arrives to pick you up! That means that you don’t have to worry about getting sick, the weather being bad, your flight being delayed, or anything else!
Child Policy
Children of any age are welcome on this tour as long as they’re either able to walk the whole time at the pace of the group or be carried by parents.
Shuttle Availability
All guests are provided complimentary pickup for every tour. Pickup is available from any local hotel, lodge, or arranged custom location—simply provide the location. A text message from the assigned guide is sent the day before the tour with the exact pickup time, meeting location, and any other details you need to know for your hike.
