SIX WAYS TO SEE DENALI FROM THE AIR

Most Denali flightseeing departs from Talkeetna, about 150 miles south of the park entrance. Flying from Healy River Airport, near the park entrance, means your flight reaches the Alaska Range faster which means more time over Denali and less time in transit. Six flightseeing options bookable in one place, flown by Fly Denali, Denali Air, TEMSCO Helicopters, and Northern Alaska Tour Company.

DENALI FLIGHTSEEING WITH GLACIER LANDING

Board a fixed-wing aircraft for 100 minutes of flightseeing over 80 miles of Denali wilderness, then land on the Ruth Glacier and step out. Twenty to thirty minutes on the ice, eleven miles from the base of Denali.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LAND ON A GLACIER

The pilot sets down on the Ruth Glacier and you step out onto the ice. Twenty to thirty minutes there: walk on it, photograph it, hear how quiet the middle of the Alaska Range actually is. Then you fly back.

Highly recommend this activity!

Our Denali helicopter ride and glacier landing was awesome. The scenery of the snow covered peaks and glaciers was breathtaking. Our pilot, Kash, was really fun and full of information about what we were seeing. It was a great experience to land and walk around on a glacier. Kash also pointed out wildlife on the ground (caribou and moose) on our return trip. Highly recommend this activity!

This was a great experience!

This was a great experience! The company is very organized and the guides provided so much information. Our pilot was so professional, we all felt very safe on the flight. The glacier is an amazing sight, from the air and on the walk. The guide on the glacier pointed out sights and gave us insight we would not have any knowledge of otherwise. This company is very well known and very safety conscious. We highly recommend and would feel safe flying with them again.

The views were amazing and beyond words!

We weren't able to land on the glacier which was a bummer but they processed our refund for that portion immediately upon landing. It's weather dependent and I'm grateful that they are so safety conscious. We were able to see the peaks of Denali though! The views were amazing and beyond words! 3 out of 5 of us felt queasy about an hour in so the shortened trip without the glacier landing worked out well for us. Brandy was super knowledgeable on the area and narrated the entire trip which helped immensely. Would highly recommend, but if you're prone to motion sickness definitely plan ahead!

Questions Before You Book

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FIXED-WING AND HELICOPTER FLIGHTSEEING?

Fixed-wing aircraft fly faster and cover more distance, which is why they fly the longer routes like the 100-minute glacier landing on the Ruth Glacier. Helicopters fly slower and lower and land on the Yanert Glacier. Both land on ice, so the choice is about the aircraft and the glacier, not about whether you get out.

  • WHICH TOUR SHOULD I CHOOSE?

If you have one flightseeing experience in Denali, most guests choose the glacier landing (fixed-wing, $779). It is the most common answer to "highlight of your entire Alaska trip." If you've done fixed-wing flightseeing elsewhere, the helicopter glacier landing offers a different aircraft experience.

  • WHAT HAPPENS IF WEATHER CANCELS MY FLIGHT?

Flights are weather-dependent. If your operator cancels, Fly Denali, TEMSCO, and Northern Alaska Tour Company each rebook you or refund in full. Book the first or second day of your Denali stay.

  • IS THE GLACIER LANDING WORTH $779?

$779 pays for 100 minutes of flight time plus 20 to 30 minutes on the Ruth Glacier, a place no road or trail reaches. Guests most often describe it as the reason they came back to Alaska.
