See the thing is, weather here can change on a dime, and to extremes. That’s why packing layers helps you in defending against these weather swings. Remember, Alaska is a big place, and most visitors’ trips here take them through the many micro-climates and varying weather during the time they are here.

For most people, visiting Alaska can be daunting when it comes to packing. Should I bring my winter coat? Will I need a ski mask, and winter boots just to walk around? Should I bring my bikini with me? In the guiding business, we know as well as anyone the value of bringing the right clothes with us to stay prepared in Denali. That’s why we thought giving you a quick rundown on a packing list would pay dividends during your trip to the far North. We decided to rank these items based on priority as well, at least from our perspective, which means that if you decide to only read halfway through the article, you’ll have gotten to look at the most important stuff.

1. Waterproof, close-toed shoes

This is in our opinion the most valuable item to have with you in Alaska. You’ll often see locals wearing the knee high Xtratuf boot, lovingly referred to as the Alaskan sneaker, but you don’t have to go that far to keep yourself comfortable while you are here. A solid hiking shoe, that is quick dry and waterproof will help set you on the right track. Good for hiking , walking around the tourism shops, and just generally cozy to spend days at a time in, this shoe will not only have you prepared for any weather that comes your way, but also guarantee you limited hassle when departing on excursions. Most guided tours, and outdoor excursions like ATVing , Ziplining , and Rafting all require close toed shoes to participate, and having a quality hiking shoe will be your ticket to having not to worry about that.

This goes along with your waterproof shoes. Alaska is no stranger to rain, and most of the excursions that you have booked during your vacation are going to depart regardless of if it’s a cloudless day or monsooning. That’s why being prepared for those kinds of days is so crucial to your comfort. The worst thing would be for you to find your way this far, just to feel stuck inside on a rainy stretch of your trip. Well don’t let that be the case – pack a quality rain jacket, and find yourself being unstoppable on your vacation! (Bonus points to those that bring a pair of rain pants with them. This will make you even more cozy during those extended outdoor excursions in inclement weather.)

Just to put this in perspective, the distance from Homer to Fairbanks is about the distance between New York City, and Lexington Kentucky. And as we all know, those climates are very different, and a lot changes in between. Well the same is true here, so bring your t-shirts, long sleeves, pants, shorts, and hoodies, because at anytime you could want it all.

4. Hat, Sunglasses, and Sunscreen

People often don’t think of Alaska a hot place where these types of things would be important. The reality is, that with the endless sunshine in the summer, and the stretches of heat that we get during June and July, these items will be invaluable to you during your time outside. Sunburn still happens, even this far North, and the last thing you’d want is to be caught unprepared, and spending half of your vacation with sunburn.

Everything outside of this is going to be up to your discretion. Things like binoculars, reusable water bottles, cameras, and bathing suits are all going to be dependent on your plans. Remember what you are coming here to do. Plan on spending a lot of time hiking? Bring a day pack, a water bottle, and some hiking socks. Want to hang out in the hotel spa the whole time or go to the hot springs? Bring that bathing suit, and book to read while you’re hanging buy the hot tub. Planning on wildlife viewing everyday you’re here Well than bring those binoculars and long lensed cameras. So much of your trip, and the things that you bring will depend heavily on how you plan on using your time here.

Northern Lights Over Denali

Coming in June and July will prove fruitless in your journey to see the lights, because there won’t be any occasions where it’s dark enough for this to happen. The best time is the dead of winter, and heading as far north as possible, but for those unwilling or unable to venture to Alaska during it most unforgiving and brutal winter months, consider September through October.

What causes the Northern Lights?

The explanation is relatively simple even if the mechanisms behind them are incredibly complex. Basically, what is happening, is that the Sun, our Sun, emits charged light particles in the form of a solar wind that travel in every direction, some of which make their way to Earth. A small portion of those electrically charged particles will integrate into the atmosphere, not being deflected by the magnetic field, and as they seep through the magnetic field and closer to the Earth, they hit atoms and molecules at high altitudes in our atmosphere, becoming excited causing them to illuminate in ovals around the north and south pole. As the charged particles convert back to their original state, they put off the colored light that we see during an auroral display! The reason that the colors vary has to do with the type of atoms that the charged particles are interacting with. The greens and reds are caused by oxygen in the atmosphere, the latter of which is caused by very high-altitude oxygen, and the purples are caused by the nitrogen atoms.

As for being able to spot the lights, well there are several variables that come into play when going on the hunt for an Aurora. The first is the weather here on earth. If it’s a cloudy night, or one with a full moon, then it’s possible you won’t be able to see them. The aurora is happening above the clouds, so from the perspective of the earth’s surface, you won’t get a look at them on a cloudy night. The full moon is something that can flood the sky with light pollution causing a weaker showing of the lights to be drowned out by this competing light.

The next factor is your proximity to non-natural light pollution. You must get out of the cities for the most part to see the lights.

Streetlights, building lights, and just general light pollution will make it very challenging to get a good look at the darkness of the sky which acts as a backdrop for a showing. Head North out of the city whenever possible and look for areas with a clear horizon that offers more space to look north.

Next, do just a little research on apps that will allow you to track to the forecast. We have gotten great as a species figuring out when we should expect a good show, all the way down to the time of night. When you find the right app, you’ll get notified for the best times to look, maximizing your chances of seeing them! A lot of the times, your hotels will also set up a wake up call for you if it’s the right time of year, upon request.

Food options inside of Denali National Park & Preserve:

First, let’s talk about what restaurants are available within the park itself. (Spoiler alert: there aren’t a ton of food options inside the park!) Keep in mind that all three of these options listed below are only open during the summer season (mid-May to mid-September) and are closed during the winter.

Located near the Denali Visitor Center and the Alaska Railroad depot, the Morino Grill is the only restaurant inside the park. This restaurant offers quick-serve cafeteria-style dining with burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, plus seafood chowder and fish ‘n’ chips. They also serve Starbucks coffee, and they have “grab & go” options if you are looking for something to take with you on your hike or bus tour. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

Just outside the park entrance, you’ll find many more options for food and drink.

Denali Park Adventures is a local, family-owned adventure tour company located just outside the entrance to Denali National Park. Denali Park Adventures is the ultimate source of adventure for all ages and all skill levels, in single, family, or group travel.

The Riley Creek Mercantile is a convenience store located in the Riley Creek Campground that sells groceries, deli sandwiches and wraps, coffee, beer, wine, and ice cream. It’s also a great place to buy things you may have forgotten to bring before venturing into the park.

At Prospectors Pizzeria you will find hand-tossed, wood stone-fired pizza, salads, soups, and pasta. If you are looking for a unique Alaskan experience, you might try one of their specialty pizzas featuring local toppings like elk, salmon, reindeer, or Alaskan king crab! Or, you may choose to enjoy a traditional favorite, like the McKinley Margarita, which features crushed fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh basil. The Black Bear

Voted “Best Coffee Shop in Alaska” by Food Network online, The Black Bear has been servicing brunch in Denali since 1997. Their menu offers a variety of tasty breakfast and lunch items including biscuits and gravy, avocado toast, eggs benedict, breakfast burritos, burgers, BLTs, salads, and soups. They value supporting local farmers by locally sourcing their proteins and produce, and they have an in-house bakery and bake all of the bread on their menu. In addition to coffee, they also serve smoothies, shakes, tea, Alaskan beers, wine, and locally brewed kombucha.

Cache Café

The Denali area’s newest coffee house hosts a delicious array of Kaladi Brothers roasts, a Local Anchorage company, and provides a wide variety of staple coffee house favorites like cookies and muffins! It’s a great place to stop by for a quick morning boost before heading out onto the trail for the day. It stands apart by offering CBD infused options as well for those who are interested.

Denali Doghouse is located right next door to our own Denali ATV Adventures office, and it is a great place to get quick service hotdogs and burgers while shopping on Denali Drive. Their menu includes reindeer hot dogs made in Alaska, as well as many other specialty hotdogs, hamburgers, and fries. They also offer black bean burgers, coleslaw, chicken nuggets, chili, and more.

Denali Doghouse

Located at the Denali Crow's Nest, tAKo Alaskan Cantina serves a unique "Alaska-Mex" dining experience that combines bold Mexican flavors with fresh Alaska ingredients, including local seafood, elk, and reindeer. With handcrafted margaritas, scenic mountain views, and a fun, welcoming atmosphere, tAKo is a favorite spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks after a day of exploring Denali.

Karstens Public House

Karstens Public House is named for the man who led the first expedition of Denali and is located at McKinley Chalet Resort. The restaurant offers Alaskan beer and cocktails along with comfort foods like jalapeno cornbread, steak frites, smoked brisket, pasta, mashed potatoes, soups, and salads. It includes both indoor and outdoor dining options. Karstens also serves an all-you-can-eat breakfast each morning.

The Alpenglow restaurant is located at Grand Denali Lodge and offers Alaskan seafood like salmon, halibut, and king crab legs. The lunch and dinner menu also includes steaks, pasta, chicken, soups, and salads. For breakfast, there are both a la carte options and a continental breakfast featuring both sweet and savory items.

Mountaineer Grill is located at the Denali Bluffs Hotel and is open for breakfast and dinner. The dinner menu offers barbecue platters, such as BBQ pulled pork, brisket, and smoked chicken, as well as other American fare (burgers, salads, baked potatoes, etc.) You can enjoy local beers and cocktails on their outdoor patio. They also offer a breakfast buffet each morning.

The Perky Moose Café at Denali Bluffs Hotel

The Perky Moose Café is another dining option at the Denali Bluffs Hotel and is open in the mornings and afternoons for “grab and go” breakfast and lunch options, coffee, and pastries.

Moose-AKa’s is an Eastern European restaurant & tavern that serves traditional Serbian family recipes made from scratch daily. Menu items include moussaka, fried crepes, stuffed peppers (including a vegan option!), schnitzel, and more. Desserts items include a Serbian-style cheesecake, as well as “Grandmother’s chocolate cake” which has an interesting combination of homemade chocolate cake made with coconut cream and oat milk, layers of crushed Brazil nuts, pureed dates, and peanut butter, and a topping of chocolate, almonds, and roasted coffee beans. Yum!

Music of Denali Dinner Theater

If you are looking to add some fun live entertainment to your night out, you might want to try the Music of Denali Dinner Theater! The night starts with an all-you-can-eat, family-style dinner including Alaskan salmon, barbeque, mashed potatoes, and apple crisp. The night continues with performances from musicians and singers, as well as a musical comedy theatrical production about the first men to reach the summit of Denali.

The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge has several dining options on the premises:

Fannie Q’s Saloon is named for Fannie Quigley, a famous Alaskan prospector, trapper, and cook. It’s open for breakfast buffet, lunch, and dinner. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu includes burgers, seafood mac & cheese, blackened salmon tacos, and more.
King Salmon is open for both breakfast and dinner. The dinner menu features Alaska seafood, pasta, chicken, and steak dishes, as well as smoked wild Alaskan salmon chowder.
Lynx Creek Pizza & Pub serves pizzas, salads, sandwiches, and ice cream.
Grizzly Burger is open for lunch and dinner and serves burgers, seafood nachos, “boozy” milkshakes, and fries. You can dine inside or out on the river view deck.
River Run Espresso sells coffees, ice cream, and pastries.

Great One Liquor and Grocery

At Great One Liquor & Grocery you can buy snacks, souvenirs, and alcohol, including picking from one of the largest selections of wines in the area. There’s also a food truck parked outside with burritos, tacos, burgers, and more. You order at the grocery counter and then collect your meal from outside.

There is also a Subway franchise location on the Denali Drive boardwalk, if you are craving something fast, easy, and familiar!

Food options north of Denali National Park entrance:

North of the Denali National Park entrance in the nearby town of Healy, Alaska, there are some dining options to satisfy your taste buds.

49th Street Brewing Company

The 49th State Brewing Company is a Denali brewpub located 10 miles from the entrance to Denali National Park. You can spend the day in the beer garden enjoying a locally crafted beer or enjoy their food menu which includes things like crab-stuffed jalapenos, Bavarian handmade pretzels with 49er beer cheese. There’s also the Brewpub Reuben made with beer-braised corned beef, marbled rye, sauerkraut, house-made 1000 Island dressing and Dutch Swiss cheese. Or be adventurous and try their famous Yak burger, which is made from locally raised Alaskan yak!

The Alaska Coffee Bean is a popular coffee house located in the town of Healy, about 10 miles away from the park. Their menu hosts both breakfast and lunch fare, as well as a wide range of coffees from North Pole Roasters. Saturdays is a bustling time to swing by and check out the farmers market they hold in their parking lots throughout the summer, and swing by any day to check out the locally made souvenirs they have for sale near the counter.

Totem Inn and Pub

The Totem Inn and Pub is a spot to not only grab a bite of some quick bar fare and pizza, but it’s also a great place to play a game of pool, watch a baseball game with the locals, or try your hand at shuffleboard. If you’re the type that’s interested in getting a feel for the types of people who live full and part time in the Denali area, this is a great place to do that.

Healy Thai Food

This hard to miss bright orange food truck located in the parking lot outside of the 49th State Brewery is a fan favorite for people craving food besides the standard American menu available most places in town. Affordable, quick and delicious, you’ll find yourself ordering one of your favorite Thai dishes, and likely to have left over Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles to take back to the hotel room with you. Make sure to try the Thai Coffee for a sweet post meal treat.

Three Bears Grocery Store

Three Bears’ mission was to bring nutrition to Alaska’s many food deserts and that’s just what they did when they planted roots in Healy. This standard grocery store is a one stop shop not only for stocking up on food, but also to pick up any items you might need, but forgot before making your way down to Denali. Camping gear, toiletries, and alcohol are just a few of the things you can scoop up while you’re in town.

Rose’s Café in Healy, AK is located at 249.5 Parks Highway and is about a 15-mile drive to the park entrance. It’s open for breakfast and lunch and was a TripAdvisor Travelers Choice winner in 2021. They offer breakfast favorites like country fried steak and eggs, omelets, French toast, bacon, sausage, homemade sourdough bread, as well as homemade desserts, pies, ice cream, and milkshakes.

Black Diamond Grill

Black Diamond Grill is located at Black Diamond Resort about 15 minutes away from the park entrance. The menu features seafood favorites, prime rib, duck, pasta, salads, and appetizers such as crab cakes and baked brie.

A few miles south of the park entrance there are also some dining options to consider!

McKinley Creekside Café and Bakery

McKinley Creekside Café & Bakery is located at McKinley Creekside Cabins on the banks of Carlo Creek, 13 miles south of Denali National Park. They serve breakfast, lunch, or dinner as well as have a wine selection and Alaskan craft beers. They have a small greenhouse and garden to add farm-to-table fresh food to their menu. Homecooked favorites include Grandma Emmi’s meatloaf, turkey pot pie, fish tacos, chili, and more. The bakery offers cinnamon rolls, blueberry scones, chocolate chip cookies, etc.

Option 2: Denali Bus Tour

If you’d rather sit back and let someone else do the driving, consider booking a Denali Bus Tour . There are the obvious ones like the app for your airline or cruise ship, but this list is going to enhance your time in Denali itself!

Our travel tools have evolved so much since the introduction of smartphones. Long gone are the days of printing out Map Quest directions, but it’s not only our GPSs that have gotten better in the age of Apple and Android. Today there is a virtual buffet of apps tailored specifically for the needs of the user. A lot of these might not be the first place your mind goes to when you think about traveling to Alaska. There are the obvious ones like the app for your airline or cruise ship, but this list is going to enhance your time in Denali itself! And the good news, is there’s only one thing on this list that will cost you anything, the rest are totally free. Without further ado, lets dive it.

1. PeakFinder: $4.99

We figured we’d get the paid app out of the way first. Don’t skip over it just yet though, because $4.99 is a steal for what this app can do, especially for those who are coming to Denali for the mountains. The point of the app? To tell you what mountains you’re looking at. This might seem simple at first glance, but when you factor in that it functions offline, outlines the mountains in augmented reality, will allow you to zoom in and focus on a specific mountain, and share and export the images, you quickly realize the value is well worth it. Take it with you outside of Alaska too, PeakFinder has more than 850,000 peaks worldwide in its database. Its available on both Apple and Android marketplaces and has a 4.7/5 review from almost 6.5k reviewers. This will make your bus ride into the National Park, or ATV ride through the Alaska Range that much more memorable.

If you’re a person who spends anytime hiking at all, you’ve probably heard of AllTrails. There’s a good reason for that, seeing as how it’s been reviewed at 4.9/5 by over 600,000 people in the Apple marketplace, also making it the best rating of any of the apps we are talking about today. This amazing app will use your location to tell you what trails are close to you, how to access them and what to expect. You can build a free account that will track your hikes for you, tell your elevation game, average pace, and you can compare it to those who have passed through there before. It’s also great for reading recent reviews. Other users will keep you up to date on wash outs, trail closures, and tricky sections. Each review is dated so you can see if those same problems are likely to affect you. This will work offline too, so even in Denali’s most wild sections you’ll be able to record your adventure. It’s available for both Apple and Android users and can also be accessed via your online browser.

For most of us with wanderlust, catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is a bucket list item, making Denali a must-see destination for those chasing the Aurora. And while the opportunity to see the Lights are relegated to the end of the summer season, when the midnight sun finally starts to set, it is an amazing sight to behold. It can be tricky to know when the lights are at their best, and when you have the best chances of spotting them. That’s where the Aurora Forecast & Alerts app comes in. This completely free program will tell you when the lights are at their best, where to see them, and even set your notifications so that it’ll keep you updated as to when to go outside. The conditions must be right, but they are predictable, and with the My Aurora Forecast app, you’ll maximize your chances. Available on both Apple and Android marketplaces, with a 4.7/5 from 14k reviewers.

4. DenaliFlora Interactive Key: Free

Of all the apps on our list so far, this one is the most likely to fly under your radar. The DenaliFlora Interactive Key is a database of plant life that you can find in Denali National Park and it’s surrounding areas. Created in 2016 by Denali’s own botany staff, this incredible botanical resource will help you identify and learn about the Parks rich ecosystem, more in depth than any pamphlet or trailside placard can. Once downloaded this app is available offline and will help you to correctly identify over 300 types of plants. If you’re looking for something specific, you can hit the Species List dropdown key to narrow you search down to more specific categories. This is another perfect example of the National Parks Services commitment to conservation and scientific learning. This app will enrich every hike you go on and have you departing from Denali with a greener thumb.

Again, we find ourselves back at the Alaskan Sky, while this time instead of an app focused on the Aurora, we have one focused on the stars. Denali is a hub for stargazing, with almost no light pollution, and impeccable air quality the late summer months are an amazing place to watch the milky way, hunt for shooting stars, and even see satellites zoom through the galactic canvas. The Night Sky app will only boost this experience for you. It will not only track and name the stars, planets, and constellations for you, it will even show you the international space station, give you notifications on impending meteor showers, and even let you interact with celestial bodies through AR technology. The wonder of the night sky is that much more impressive when you get to learn about what you are seeing. The only downside for this app is that it is only available iOS users, meaning that android users will have to search for a different option. An optional premium subscription is available for $4.99 a month, that would include Aurora Mapping, Night Sky Tours, and a database of billions of stats that can be streamed from the cloud. On its own though, the free subscription is plenty powerful for the average user. It has almost 300k reviews, ranking it at a 4.7/5.

Best Hikes in Denali National Park

The trail has steps built into it that will allow for easier treks during the descent and ascent. Once you get to the bottom, you will find yourself hiking the shoreline of a beautiful blue body of water, inhabited by beavers, moose, birds of all variety, and even the occasional bear.

Let us be honest, one of the main reasons people come to places like Denali is to get boots on the ground and explore the hiking trails that lead to mountain peaks, and backcountry tundra. Not only does it get you in touch with nature, and give you a decent work out, it is also one of the best ways to really savor the spectacular views that the area has to offer. With Denali being such a big place, it can be tough for someone know where to start when it comes to hiking, which is why I decided to put together this list from my years of living here. All these trails can be found in even more detail on the app AllTrails (mentioned in our previous blog post Best Travel Apps for Alaska ).

Savage River Trail

Of all trails on the list this one is undoubtedly the easiest. Do not take that as a reason not to investigate it, because the payoff that you get from the short loop section ends up giving you one of the best values tradeoffs for your trail time. Additionally, for those seeking a bit more of a challenge, you can do the loop and the optional alpine section of the trail that leads you up a mountain to view the river valley below. The trail head is located at the 16-mile marker of Denali National Park , the furthest you can drive a personal vehicle into the park. Once you get to the parking lot, you will quickly spot the trail running right alongside the Savage River. The loop is 2.1 miles long, and only gains about 413 ft throughout the hike. The whole journey runs close to the powerful Savage River, whose sound of rushing water fills the valley like a chorus in a stone amphitheater.

For the people seeking the alpine section of the trail, you will find it as soon as you hop onto the trail from the parking lot. Unlike the loop, this trail is 4.1 miles and gains 1,414 ft. towering above the valley below. It is also a point to point and will not bring you back to where your car was parked, though a shuttle is available from the end point at the Savage River Campground to the parking lot of the trail. Besides offering a beautiful view, this section of trail will also lead you through a section of rocks that offer an interesting close-range spectacle, and a limited bouldering area for those who might be in search of that. Plan for at minimum 2 hours for the average hiker.

Triple lakes, like the Savage River Alpine Trail, is a point to point. One direction will carry you about 9.5 miles, and will gain anywhere from 1,000 ft to 3,000ft. The most common way for people who live around the area is to tackle this trek, is to take a personal vehicle to the trailhead on the George Parks Highway near the Grizzly Bear Resort, and The Village. From there, you hike up the trail head, crossing over the railroad line, and up into the mountains. If you do the hike from this direction, the three lakes in the Triple Lakes will be stacked in your direction. If you instead were to do it from the visitor’s center in the park the lakes would be at the end of the trail. One of the things that I’ve always loved so much about this hike, is that during the right time of the summer, there are bushels of wild berries growing all along the trail side, as well as having the perfect mixture of alpine ridge hiking, shaded sections under the canopy of the boreal forest, and waterside walks that help to attract all manner of wildlife.

Two important things to keep in mind as you plan for this hike is

The trail does run inside of the park boundary, even though it may not feel like it when you start from the section on the highway, which means that all the national park rules apply to the entirety of the hike.
If you are planning to hike this trail just one direction instead of doing a roundtrip hike of almost 19 miles, you’ll need to arrange a way to get back to your vehicle. If you are staying at one of the hotels near the highway side of the hike, check in with them to see if you can arrange for a shuttle ride back from the visitor’s center, or park one car at the visitor’s center, and one on the road to guarantee your return.

Triple Lakes

Do not get this hike confused with the Healy Overlook Trail that starts inside the National Park. While that is a fantastic walk, the Healy Overlook trail from Bison Gulch is more of a challenge by most reports. This hike is a strait shot up the mountain, 3.5 miles up and 3.5 back down. Unlike similar hikes you might find in other parts of the country, there are no switchbacks on this trail, instead offering a well-worn game trail all the way to the top of Mt. Healy’s castle rock summit. Getting to the summit will take you 3,868 ft. of gain. Most people plan around 5-7 hours for this hike depending on ability, so for most it will be the one activity the do for that day. Parking at the base of the trail is simple, and just across the highway from the from the trail itself. Head north past the Nenana River crossing at Windy Bridge and look for the roadside sign that says Bison Gulch. If you are North bound, the parking lot will be on your right.

This hike is amazing, and challenging, the views from the top span all the way from Denali itself to the horizon where you lose track of the Alaska range. Bring water, food, and a camera on this hike for sure, and keep track of the weather. The journey will take you to well within cloud range and is a less than ideal spot to find yourself caught if there is a storm rolling through. If you complete it, you will be one of the small percentages that do in any given summer, as this hike is intimidating for most people visiting.

Mt. Healy at Bison Gulch

Kesugi Ridge

Of all the hikes we have put on the list, this is the only one that will take you more than one day to complete. Located in Denali State Park, this 29.2-mile point to point covers 5,990ft of gain and will take you throughout the entire North to South boundary of the state park. Like most the hikes on this list, the best time of year to take a swing at this hike will be during the peak summer months. This trail is comprised of a collection of other trails as well, so to find the start point you will want to look for Little Coal Creek on the North side of the park. The end point is at Byres Creek Campground for most people, but there is an additional 12 miles available for hiking if that is something you are wanting to do.

Things to keep in mind for this journey is that the hike is mostly in alpine territory so shelter from the elements is limited, as well as sun exposure will be something that you will have to factor in. The few lakes along the way will over a welcome respite to you on particularly warm days, so if you can predict it, it will pay off. This trip will offer unparalleled view of Denali and will offer a much more casual experience that is offered by the state park. Be mindful that like in most areas of Alaska, this is bear territory, and 2-4 days of trail time will up your odds of running into some of Denali’s larger wildlife so plan accordingly.

Horseshoe Lake

The final trip on our list brings us back into the National Park. Horseshoe lake is one of the first hikes you will come across as you enter the park and comes well before the visitor’s center. A parking lot is situated on the right side of the road, close to the train tracks, and will set you on the right direction towards finding one of Denali’s most well-maintained trails. The trail has steps built into it that will allow for easier treks during the descent and ascent. Once you get to the bottom, you will find yourself hiking the shoreline of a beautiful blue body of water, inhabited by beavers, moose, birds of all variety, and even the occasional bear. The Mountainside whose shadow you will often find yourself in towers above the whole valley offering a spectacle no matter where you are on the trail. Hike along to find bridges that connect footpaths over creek crossings and wander off the trail a little to get along the shoreline of the mighty Nenana River. The hardest part of this trip will be the hike back out, which does include the trail stairs. At the end of the day, the 2.1-mile hike is considered easy, and has one of the highest volume of ratings by users on AllTrails. Plan for a minimum of 45 minutes, though you could spend an entire day in this area if you enjoy yourself!

Denali National Park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities such as hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, and mountaineering. The park is home to Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America, and visitors can take guided tours to the summit or explore the park's vast wilderness on their own. The park also offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, including grizzly bears, wolves, caribou, and Dall sheep. Additionally, the park's natural beauty and diverse landscapes, from tundra to glaciers, make it a great destination for photography and sightseeing.

Undoubtedly, if you have been doing research on your trip to Alaska this summer, you’ve stumbled across the realization that a landslide in Denali National Park has caused limited access on the Park Road. Well, I’m here to tell you that while this might give you reason to second guess your trip, in reality this should not sway your consideration for visiting Alaska’s Crown Jewel.

Should I rethink my Denali trip?

Here’s the thing, the main draws of the Park are still available despite the work being done at the Pretty Rocks landslide location. You may be asking yourself, “How can that be? The road access ends at 45 miles!” Don’t panic! That’s what the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy taught us, and here that lesson applies. The reality is; 1. Despite the road closure you are still able to see Mt. Denali from many locations, both inside and outside the Park. 2. No one told the wildlife about the landslide at Pretty Rocks, which means that all the moose and bears and eagles you hope to see keep showing up for work! And 3. All of the best, and well established trail systems are in the front country of the Park. Savage River, Horseshoe Lake, Healy Overlook, and Triple Lakes are all still spectacularly maintained by the Park Service and are easily accessible daily.

Now you might be wondering, “Yea, but I’m not going to get the full experience if I can’t go all the way to Kantishna, right?” and to that I’d reply, “What is it that you are hoping to get out of your journey here?” If it’s literally just to see the additional mileage and spend many additional hours on a bus, then yes, there will be a small gap left in your itinerary. But if you are like me and prefer quality to quantity, then you’d be wrong to think that Denali is best experienced on a bus. After living and working in Denali for a decade, my humble opinion is that you’ll find the most magical areas are all available to you. Not to mention that all the Parks additional facilities, like its Train Station, Visitor Center, and Science and Learning Center are all still open for business!

Let’s look at this another way. Denali National Park is roughly 6.6 million square acres. To put that into perspective, that’s just about the size of Massachusetts. Now, if you were planning a vacation to New England, and you found that you were going to have maybe 1 or even 2 days in Massachusetts, do you really think that you’d be able to explore the entirety of the state in a quality way during that time? NO WAY! You’d be making a list of the must-do’s and dedicating your time to checking those items off. That’s exactly what I’m getting at here. Most, if not all, of Denali’s must-dos are still accessible to you as a visitor.

Why should I still visit Denali?

Additionally, the amount of time spend in the park isn’t a direct correlation to your opportunity to adventure in the area. There’s a myriad of activities in the surrounding community that you still have access to, and some would argue greater potential for diversity when budgeting your Park time. There’s a rich tapestry of adventure excursions in the area that provide access to parts of interior Alaska just as spectacular as anything you’ll find inside the imaginary lines of the Park Boundary (Alaska’s beauty is too big to stay confined to a manmade marker after all). Instead, consider filling that gap in your itinerary with an ATV or Zipline Excursion in the Stampede Corridor, an area made famous by the “Into The Wild” story, and who’s country was originally slated to be a part of the Park, but was set aside for the unleashed spirit of the Healy locals, and their want to engage with the landscape. Take a Jeep down the Denali Highway, where you get a sister experience to the Park road, with ample opportunity to see Mt. Denali, as well as wildlife, in a landscape vast and untouched, but from the comfort of a climate-controlled, private vehicle. Maybe you want to see the mountain more up close and personal… Did you know that you can land on it’s glacier strewn slopes in a bush plane, and plant your feet in the ice which helped carve the Mountain Ranges which slice through Alaska’s wilderness? Maybe for you, a trip to Alaska wouldn’t be complete with a heart pounding journey through the white water of the Nenana River, and the unique view of the jutting canyons which are only accessible from a raft, with a paddle in hand.

The point is that Denali is so much more than just the Park Road, and you’d be doing a disservice to yourself to write it off because of a few miles of inaccessible gravel. Instead, come here, and take that extra time to tread the ground less seen, and the corners unexplored. Find the places you wouldn’t have ever engaged with from the passenger seat of a bus. Be your own driver, your own map maker, and explore despite it all. You’ll find that you’ve left the interior with a backpack full of memories that you’ll never regret.
